Two types of programs: operating system and utility system. Operating system: main program that controls how your computer functions. Os manages computer"s hardware such as the processer, memory and storage devices, as well as peripheral devices. Provides a consistent means for software applications to work with the cpu. Is responsible for the management, scheduling and interaction of tasks, access os through desktop on computer. Utility programs: small programs that perform many of the general housekeeping tasks for the computer such as system maintenance and file compression. These types of operating systems are used in devices that perform a repetitive series of specific tasks. Might require interaction with users and time critical. Used in devices with only one application program such as an atm. Instruments such as scientific, defense or aerospace ones require these os"s since they do pigmented tasks or record precise results.
