External environment: events and conditions surrounding an organization that influences its activities. Examples of environmental influences are: the opec oil embargo, sars and the global recession that prompted companies like gm to file for bankruptcy. Open systems: systems that take inputs from the external environment, transform some of them, and send them back into the environment as outputs. Examples of inputs: capital, energy, materials, information, technology and people. Transformation processes can be physical (manufacturing or surgery), intellectual (teaching), or even emotional (psychotherapy) Social/political factors: changes in public attitudes towards ethnic diversity, the proper age for retirement, the environment, corporate responsibility, or the proper role of big business, attitudes find expression in law through the political process (legal regs) Technology: technology refers to the ways of doing things, the ability to adopt the proper technology should enhance an organization"s effectiveness, ex. Computer aided design- draft quick, accurate drawings via computer.
