Communication: the process by which information is exchanged between a sender and receiver: interpersonal communication - communication between people. The sender must encode his thoughts into some form that can be transmitted to the receiver. The receiver must perceive the message and accurately decode it to understand. This strict chain of communication is often ineffective. Effective communication: communication whereby the right people receive the right information in a timely manner. Chain of command: lines of authority and formal reporting relationships. A lot of organizational communication follows formalities, however the reality is that formal chain of command is incomplete and often ineffective path of communication. Managers recognize that sticking to this chain of command is often ineffective. Informal communication: this helps people accomplish their jobs more effectively, but can start unnecessary rumours. Filtering: the tendency for a message to be watered down of stopped during transmission. Slowness: chain of command can be slow. Cross-functional teams and employee empowerment can improve this.
