A tree is woody, more or less erect, usually single stemmed and may exceed. 6m in height (oak tree, dogwood shrub, bittersweet vine) Trees are vascular land plants, the move nutrients through themselves. Trees are ancient in origin; have been one the planet longer than animals. Dominant vegetation since the carboniferous period (265-295 million years ago) Angiosperms (flowering plants) arose 100 million years ago. Today, there are 700 conifer species and about 30,000 species of flowering trees. Record breaking trees, tallest tree is a coast redwood (sequoia sempervirens) in california, standing at 112. 2m. Bristlecone pines (pinus arista and p. longaeva) in california and nevada are some of the oldest trees. Ancient yews of england are found on ancient burial sites dating from neolithis to saxon periods. One stem will grow for thousands of years and other stems will grow around it and eventually morph into the original and support it.
