Document Summary

Inflammation is the active response of tissues to injury that can be either beneficial and protective or exaggerated and harmful. It is a local response that occurs at the site of injury; however systemic consequences may also be observed. The response is complex because it involves an immune response, the coagulation cascade and regeneration/repair processes. The function of inflammation is to protect the body following injury that is accomplished by various processes. These include elimination of injurious stimuli such as bacteria, chemicals or irritants, containment of the damage (e. g. formation of an abscess), removal of necrotic cells and stimulation of repair and regeneration. As mentioned, inflammation is not always beneficial and if exaggerated, the response does more harm than good. Examples of this include allergic reactions, autoimmune reactions and spinal cord trauma. An individual experiencing local inflammation- can have- fever, anorexia and lethargy. If left untreated, chronic inflammation can stimulate fibrosis or scarring.
