Document Summary

Unit 11: drugs used in the treatment of parasitic infestations. Chemotherapy for parasitic infections, there are three major targets: 1- a unique essential molecule found only in the parasite, 2- similar molecules found in both host and parasite but indispensable only for parasite, and. 3- common biochemical functions found in both parasite and host but with different pharmacological properties. Parasites of people can be categorized as either macroscopic such as taenia species (tapeworms), Enterobius (pinworms) and pediculus (head louse) or microscopic parasites such as entamoeba (amebiasis), giardia (beaver fever), trichomonas and plasmodium (malaria). Examples of taenia species that can infect humans: Human is the host and the cattle or pigs represent the intermediate host. The eggs or gravid proglottids are released into the environment and cattle (t. saginata) or pigs (t. solium) become infected when they ingest vegetation that is contaminated. The oncospheres hatch and penetrate the intestinal wall of the cattle or pigs and eventually circulate to the musculature.
