Document Summary

Prisoner"s dilemma: players receive the option to compete or the option to cooperate, depending on what each player does there are different pay-offs. Each player can either defect (squeal to police) or cooperate (not say anything) If one player defects and the other cooperates then the defector gets no jail sentence and the person who cooperated gets five years in prison. If both players defect on each other, they both get three years. If both players cooperate and remain silent, they each get one year. If player b chooses to cooperate, defect = 0 years / cooperate = 1 year. If player b chooses to defect, defect = 3 years / cooperate = 5 years. If both were to choose cooperate though, each player would only receive 1 year each = this dilemma illustrates the tragedy of the commons. Tragedy of the commons: proposed by garret hardin.
