Intro to molecular biology- lecture 2, march 1, 2017. A membrane bound compartment with a characteristic content and a specific function. Compartment a separate section or part of something, an area in which something can be considered in isolation from other things. What does a compartment achieve: compartmentalizes: divide a whole into separate parts of sections, sequesters: keeps contents from mixing with others. Fluorescence microscopy- excite or energize back to ground state. Organized with respect to time and space. Fidelity of interactions is maintained through control of regulation of parts. Water is avery good solvent, the h2o molecule is: polar this is the answer, non polar, heliophilic, organic. Amphipathic- having both hydrophobic ( non-polar) and a hydrophilic (polar) regions. Membrane fluidity is determined by: natue of lipids in membrane. Warm = liquid crystal state looking at diagram on slide 10, warm is more fluid- more moving space for the molecules.
