Document Summary

Find digestion in specific place in cell/organism, protected-enzymes cannot get to own tissues. Digestive enzymes introduced into phagocytosis vesicles: intracellular digestion-cells bring food into cell through phagocytosis, food vacuole, lysosomes have digestive enzymes, fuse to lysosomes, broken down. Digestion to break down old things (mitochondrion: extracellular digestion-occurs outside the cell, multicellular organisms-some digestion occurs in digestive compartment, digest larger pieces of food. Saliva first stage of chemical digestion, dissolving/breaking covalent bonds, amylase-important enzyme in saliva-breaks down amylose-starch. Also has mucus-protect mouth from abrasion, moistens food- easier to swallow, protects tissues from being digested in stomach. Sphincters in and out of stomach, open and close as needed. Protein digestion starts in stomach, carb starts with saliva. Stomach initiates p digestion and storage- horse too monogastric. Pepsin (enzyme) and hydrochloric acid break down 3d structure of proteins. Proteins activity depends on its 3d form: mucus cells-protect stomach from being digested by own enzymes-insufficient=ulcers, chief cells-secret pepsinogen, parietal cells-hydrochloric acid.
