Document Summary

Consists of medulla oblongata, pons, and the midbrain (mescenephalon) and forms the connection b/w the spinal cord and the rest of the brain. Functional group of integrating centres in cerebral cortex, thalamus, and hypothalamus. Memory = ability to store and retrieve info derived from experience; essential for learning. Limbic system receives sensory input, which provides signals w/emotional qualities. Also receives inputs from monoamine neurons of the brainstem powerful modulating function. Monoaminergic neurons: contain either serotonin, dopamine, noradrenalin, or adrenalin. The limbic system receives critical inputs from the cortex, sensory signals, which provides such signals w/emotional qualities, which then modulate functions of the hypothalamus and midbrain (pag) Reciprocal inhibitory connections b/w lh and mh ultilize gaba as a neurotransmitter. The relationship allow either predatory attack or defensive rage to occur at a given time. This takes place bc when one of the responses is prepotent, the other is suppressed by virtue of the inhibitory relationship w/the other region.
