They were intended to be exemplars of noble action, and were often very serious in tone. You were meant to hold a history painting, and meant to be inspired to some similar kind of noble deed being represented. This tradition has a lo(cid:374)g histor(cid:455), a(cid:374)d is (cid:272)losel(cid:455) alig(cid:374)ed (cid:449)ith the italia(cid:374) istoria, (cid:894)(cid:374)arrati(cid:448)e(cid:895). It"s (cid:374)ot just a sho(cid:449) of history, but a show of narrative. This is a very modern art form, the idea that you take a story and elevate the nuts and bolts to this painterly significance. They were often rendered in large scale, and included allegories. Elite form of artistic production that requires intellectual decoding for iconographic meaning, but also for significance within that contemporary artistic culture. You start to see history painting sit towards this highest pinnacle of artistic production, a(cid:374)d refle(cid:272)ts the (cid:272)li(cid:373)a(cid:454) of a pai(cid:374)ter"s edu(cid:272)atio(cid:374), trai(cid:374)i(cid:374)g a(cid:374)d sig(cid:374)ifi(cid:272)a(cid:374)(cid:272)e.
