Document Summary

Anth 2230 week 3 family and kinship. Ie means stem family in japan. There are two major characteristics of a stem family: It consists of generations of married couples. Members married into the family are still permanent members of the family even after death. Only one child remains as the family"s successor. The eldest son most commonly remains in the family, this is preferred but not universal. But: a daughter may remain in the family if the eldest son doesn"t want to take the position and she is the only other sibling. Daughters are often married-out as brides and become part of their spouses stem family. Brides and adopted husbands are sometimes sent back to their original stem families if they are deemed unsuitable. Muko yoshi = adopted sons/husbands also marry in. Second sons often leave and make their own stem family. Descent is traced bilaterally (through the mother and father) but is stem family based.
