For example, if you look a some breeds of dogs and other species you will see they have both long guard hairs for waterproofing among other things and a dense undercoat for insulation. In addition, mammals can also have hairs that are closely associated with touch receptors in the the skin called whiskers so they can be used for tactile exploring of the environment under poor visibility conditions. The only difference between hair and fur is the growth pattern. Feathers perform many of the same functions as hair including insulation and waterproofing.
