Expectations of the police: the police are expected to, maintain order, prevent and control crime, provide community services. Key studies: project 25 (1954, beat patrol experiments (1965, nyc rand institute study (1966, nyc subway experiment (1965, kansas city preventative patrol experiment (1972, community sector team policing program (comsec) (1973) Project 25: a well-known experiment in policing in the twenty-fifth precinct in. Nyc: the number of patrolmen were doubled for four months, conclusion: major increase in patrol reduce some street crimes (muggings, auto thefts, burglaries). There was no evidence of displacement: only examined changes in reported crime, not actual crime, the period of study was only 8 months. It may be that decreases were only temporary: little effort was expended to match areas in terms of socio-economic status, as such, neither nyc study was a true experiment. They use decoys, stakeouts, and close surveillance to target crime.
