Mood disorders/suicide: overview of mood disorders, impairment of baseline mood. People often complain that they cannot get happy: anxiety versus depression. Anxiety is energy motivated versus depression is lethargic state (psychological difference) Major depression: cognitive symptoms in addition to mood, such as excessive guilt, cognitive impairment making decisions and concentrating, disturbed physical functioning, loss of sleep, appetite, weight and movement, sleep and appetite can be lost or gained. Persistent depressive disorder: the younger the age at which a person gets depressed, the more severe the condition is and the higher genetic load the person has for depression. Link between mood incongruent features and a psychotic disorder i. e. schizophrenia; schizophrenia can have major depressive episodes. Ex: increased drive and energy, grandiosity, feeling hopeless, agitated, sleeping excessively: not rare but less common than non-mixed episodes, someone with this pattern has higher risk of suicide.
