PSYC 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Synaptic Pruning, Reuptake, Positron Emission Tomography
Document Summary
Can grow over time- babies are born with most of their nerves, they have the neurons needed to do ordinary things but they are not connected. When one neuron res, more re with it. Synaptic pruning- around age 2, connections between brain cells are cut, making us able to be better at problem solving, if you"re not using a connection- it will be cut, if you don"t use it, you lose it. Another round of pruning happens around age 11. Brain stem- neurons are rst developed here, at 6 months things are specialized. Move upward- later on they start making their way into the brain. After trauma, neurons don"t grow back, but other neurons can take its place. Atypical brain development- born with a defect (blind), still born with all the neurons but if they"re not used- they are respecialized. When chemicals are red from the neurons, they bond with the receptor (another neuron)
