Liberalism goes to the 18th century, to the rise of enlightenment. Liberalism has a number of diff strands, and has a number of elements. Realists argue that profound change doesn"t happen often. Other actors both above and below the state level matter in international relations. We"ve lost the unity element of statehood and rationality because from a liberal point of view, ir is a product of bargaining between different actors of different levels. Rationality: ability to identify goals and adopt policies. Liberals are more positive about the possibility of cooperation. They believe that interdependence is a good thing. Realists: if interdepende limits your freedom of option, get out. Liberals: benefits of interdependence may out way sovereignty. Realists argue that the state is the basic unit. Locke proposed the idea that ind choices outside the state preference matter. Kant: reason rather than force: idea that realism is not all about force, the idea of reason.
