Document Summary

Roderick chisholm, human freedom and the self . Note, every author we have read (regarding free will) up until this point has reiterated this problem in some way (each think they have a response/solution to it). If every event involved in your action is caused, you"re not morally responsible for the action. All of your actions can be traced back to before you were born, and you are not morally responsible for something that happened before you were born. If every event in an action is uncaused, you"re still not morally responsible for it. If there is an uncaused event in the production of your action, then that is an event that just happens (fluky, spontaneously, without cause). If you can"t be responsible for that uncaused event, you can"t be responsible for anything that derives from that uncaused event. Therefore, you"re not morally responsible for it.
