KNES 433 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: World Health Organization, Densitometry, Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry
Document Summary
Lecture 19 obesity: according to the world health organization, about 39 per cent of adults aged 18 years and older were overweight in 2014, and 13 per cent were obese. This number is expected to grow over subsequent years: obesity = excessive/abnormal accumulation of fat depots linked with a mild chronic inflammation (ongoing). Obesity = macrophages excessive adipose tissue due to unbalanced energy budgets (consumption > expenditure surplus body fat) impaired functioning: genes play a major role in determining susceptibility to obesity. Energy balance (intake vs expenditure) plays an accompanying role in suppression/expression of developing obesity. Morbidity/mortality: prevailing and alternative models of obesity (prevailing = widely accepted) image, 3rd model = (-) feedback loops between brain/gut & brain/fat tissue regulate fatness and appetite. Bmi/wc/fat mass index, anthropometry (skin folds), technology monitors linked to scales: bmi fails to pick up on the differences (i. e. : between obese and jacked). 1994 = existence confirmed, 1948 = concept was postulated.
