Chandler thought of his detective novels as centering around the detective. The settings range from the very highest levels of society with butlers and so on to a sketchy office building with a used condom in the stairwell. Characters are from different walks of life but primarily the dividing line is between those who are of a criminal class and those who are not. Some people go between these two areas of society (such as. Cha(cid:374)dler"s (cid:448)er(cid:271)al st(cid:455)le of (cid:272)reati(cid:374)g se(cid:374)te(cid:374)(cid:272)es a(cid:374)d the s(cid:373)art-aleck dialogue. The vivid and sometimes totally inappropriate descriptions of various things.
