Those individuals who do not have a job, is available for work and who are seeking employment. (note: you must be actively looking for work to be officially unemployed) All persons aged 15 and over who are employed and all those who are unemployed but actively looking for work. (note: you must be actively looking for work to be part of the labour force. Unemployment rate: (# of people unemployed / labour force) x 100. Unemployment rate = 1. 17 million / 17. 34 million x 100 = 6. 8% Participation rate (labour force / adult population) x 100. Note: after wwii, the participation rate was about 24% but now, it"s closer to 62%. Individuals who would like to work but have given up looking for work. These people (although unemployed) are not part of the unemployment rate because they are not actively looking for a job .
