Idea that there is a singular truth out there to be discovered. You just need the right methods to discover it. On the other end of the epistemological approach we have social constructivism. Knowledge is seen as a creation of meaning. There are real things out there but we make sense of it through our connection and creation to it. There can be multiple views of reality at one time. Key features: critical stance toward taken for granted knowledge. Idea is to challenge the view: historical & cultural specifity; the idea that knowledge is created through historical and cultural specificity, knowledge is sustained through social processes: idea that knowledge is actively produced thought daily procedures. Knowledge exists through our interaction with others: knowledge and social action go together. Critical scholarship: troubles the assumptions, principles and practices that any field of knowledge claims as its foundations of truth. We feel comfortable in our lives to put thing in a box.
