Natural attenuation is a passive strategy that relies on natural processes including microorganisms to achieve site speci c clean up. Microorganisms are powerful because they can use hydrocarbons as their source of energy. Mna is a passive approach, but you need to pay attention to what is happening in ground to make sure hydrocarbons are actually disappearing. Active treatments include injecting nutrients for microbes to carry out their activity properly. Need to provide evidence for biodegradation and show the hydrocarbons are actually disappearing. Mna can be used for low re nery cuts, which are often fuels associated with storage tanks that lead to underground leaks. Btex hydrocarbons are water soluble compared to many other hydrocarbons, and as groundwater moves away from source btex compounds will also spread. Benzene is the most carcinogenic of btex hydrocarbons. There might be a site where excavation is possible but its in a high risk area.
