Mutagen treatment: enu in water with fish, it will introduce mutations into the spermatogonia of males, which get mutations, then screen for the mutations that cause developmental defects. Screening protocol for identifying mutations of zebrafish development (on right) The male parent is mutagenized and mated with a wt female. If some of the male"s sperm carry a recessive mutant allele, then some of the f1 progeny of the mating will inherit that allele. F1 individuals (male carrying the mutant allele) are mated with wt partners to create an f2 generation in which some males and some females carry the recessive mutant allele. When the f2 fish are mated, approximately 25% of their progeny will show the mutant phenotype. An example of an identified gene: chordino, a. 370 other developmentally important genes were identified. As in xenopus without antagonism to the bmp signals (without bmp inhibitors), the embryo is all ventralized.
