Gender affects people differently, depending on those other social factors. For a long time, gender was studied as an independent variable. Toda(cid:455), (cid:449)e k(cid:374)o(cid:449) that (cid:449)e (cid:272)a(cid:374)(cid:859)t speak of it as a(cid:374) i(cid:374)depe(cid:374)de(cid:374)t (cid:448)a(cid:396)ia(cid:271)le, (cid:449)e u(cid:374)de(cid:396)sta(cid:374)d that e(cid:448)e(cid:396)(cid:455)thi(cid:374)g is (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:374)e(cid:272)ted. Our understanding of gender is usually ruled by hierarchy: distinction between men and women in society, whereby men are valued more than women. Usually distinct by biological sex differences: white feminists usually failed to understand the way that other social factors also affect gender. The (cid:862)g(cid:396)oups(cid:863) i(cid:374) (cid:395)uestio(cid:374) a(cid:396)e (cid:374)ot g(cid:396)oups that o(cid:374)e joi(cid:374)s (cid:448)olu(cid:374)ta(cid:396)il(cid:455); o(cid:374)es that so(cid:272)iet(cid:455) puts us i(cid:374)to (cid:271)ased o(cid:374) featu(cid:396)es. The categorization is also hierarchical; these groups are not equal in society; produced in relation to one another: we are not passively put into these groups.
