Document Summary
Living gendered lives: gender relations in school. Gender differences and educational attainment has been a salient topic in sociology for several decades. In the 1960s and 1970s, the concern was that classroom experiences highly favoured boys. It was feared that girls were losing out in education. Today, the enrolment of women in canadian universities has exceeded that of men. While men still predominate at the doctoral level, the gap appears to be narrowing. Architecture, agriculture, engineering, math, physics, and forestry remain male-dominated. Living gendered lives: gender relations in work. Women have a more difficult time translating educational credentials into dollars when they enter the labour market. Although gender segregation in university programs contributes to pay imbalances, evidence suggests that males still earn higher starting salaries compared to females, even in the same occupations. This means that as a general trend, men are paid at higher starting salaries. Because of child-rearing, women are paid less.
