REN R462 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Arthur Tansley, Climax Community, Superorganism
Document Summary
A complete system of national parks should have parks in every type of zone under the canada"s. National park system, different from merriam"s life zones. Ecoregions: map lines generally depict the location of zones of transition. Habitat conservation vs. species conservation it"s easier to conserve an area than it is to conserve thousands of species. Parks don"t offer full coverage or protection because some areas are not attractive or don"t matter that much to the public, politicians aren"t going to put in the effort to turn them into parks ie sand dunes. This principle still has an impact on concepts of ecology now: Gleason: argued that there was more happenstance and that species respond individually, not as a part of a community, was correct but clements was more popular. Frederick clements: argued that for every area succession converges towards a climax community.
