PSYCO282 Lecture Notes - Lecture 27: Habit Reversal Training, Ego Depletion, Abusive Power And Control
Document Summary
Ego depletion: after exerting self-control on one task, you will be less e ective on other tasks. Willpower improvement obtained by participating in a study program, improving your posture, using your non-dominant hand, saying yes instead of yeah. Exerting willpower leads to ego depletion in the short term, but as you exercise your willpower, it increases over time, just like a muscle grows stronger, called strength willpower control. Ways to strengthen willpower: keeping track of your eating. Results of strengthened willpower: smoking, drinking, and snacking less. How to apply willpower: people who score the highest in self-control use it the least every day. Those with high self-control use it to create strong (positive) automatic habits. Those who scored low, their lives were structured so that they were constantly forced to use willpower to resist temptation. Strength model: reliable experimental model, but does not explain by people may resist a particular temptation.
