But there is clearly a winner for the parents and the coach. Minimizing competition doesn"t held children but it might hurt them. In an experiment one group is told that they are smart when they solve an easy problem. One group was praised for their hard work. Children who were told were smart couldn"t solve as many problems as the children who were praised for their hard work. Children need to learn that excellence comes from effort. A parent tells his child who is a non- reader that she is a good reader thinking that it will make her a good reader. But it can be bad for the child. Artificially high self- esteem can lead to violence when other people given them criticism. In an experiment, people who thought they were superior were more aggressive.
