Chapter three neuroscience (september 20, 22, 27, 29) The scientific study of the nervous system: neurons are nerve cells that are the basic building block of the nervous system. About 2% of body weight but contains 20% of oxygen - lack of o2 leads to problems and so does too much of it. The nervous system extends around the body. The enteric nervous system (ens) is the nervous system in our gut: about 100 million neurons in the gut, gut bacteria even affects the nervous system may affect brain too. They help transmit info across the body, up to a meter long communicate through distances, short ones in brain. Parts of a neuron: dendrites: collect messages from neighbouring neurons (may be multiple neighboring neurons! Absolute refractory cannot have action potential. Relative refractory harder to have action potential: excitatory and inhibitory signals result in graded potentials.
