PERLS207 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Least Restrictive Environment
Document Summary
September 14th service delivery for people with impairments. What are the 4 service delivery models: relative isolation, integration, inclusion, empowerment. What are the 3 main events that caused the changes in delivery models throughout history: human conflict, war veterans came back injured and the only place to put them was in institutions. Many people did not see this as an acceptable choice: formation of humanitarian organizations, united nations in 1940s giving human rights to all people, legislation to protect the rights of people with impairments. When was the relative isolation model the most popular: the 1900-1950s. What is the foundation of the relative isolation model: this is a facilities based model, institutions, residential programs, special schools, strong segregation occurred in most cases, also known as the segregation model. In the relative isolation models, how were people viewed by society: people were treated as victims or patients, often resulting in mistreatment, abuse, lack of privacy and respect.
