Also known as willis-ekbom disease (wed), or ekbom disease. An uncomfortable sensation in one or both legs (often described as an irresistible urge to move the legs) that is relieved by moving or rubbing the affected limbs. Diagnostic criteria: desire to move the limbs usually associated with paresthesias/dysthesias, motor restlessness, symptoms are worse or exclusively present at rest (lying, sitting) with at least partial and temporary relief by activity, symptoms are worse in evening/night. Additional clinical features: sleep disturbance and its consequences, involuntary movements involuntary limb movements while awake and at rest (periodic limb movements in sleep - plms, no pathology on neurological examination, clinical course, family history. 81% of patients had reported their symptoms to their physician. Abnormalities in tyrosine hydroxylase an enzyme involved in dopamine synthesis iron is a co-factor for this enzyme. Epidemiology approximately 10% prevalence in the adult population. 11-27% prevalence during pregnancy (most in third trimester)
