Chapter 15 Nutrition from Infancy to Adolescence
- Found Canadian children and youth are not as healthy as they could be
o Saturated fat and sodium intake are higher than desirable
o 20% of children 30% of adolescents consume excess calories

- Children learn by example, eating and exercise habits develop during childhood
- Normal growth is the best measurement of good nutrition
- Growth is significant in first year of life, slows after this until adolescence
o Affected by genetic, environmental and lifestyle
- During adolescents is almost as significant as the 1st year
- Recommended nutrient intakes the same for males and females until the age of 9
- Largeset macronutrient change in children is fat
o 40-55% of kcals as infants
o 30-40% for 1-3 years
