Chapter 13 Lecture Part 2
- Training Diet
o Eating pattern that a competitive athlete follwos to prepare for their even
o Goals; maintain body weight(diet in off season), enhance performance, meet
basic nutritional needs and maintain health and wellness
o Macronutrients:
General recommended diet includes: 60% of kcal from carbs( limiting fuel
needed to support vigorous exercise)
15-25% kcal from fat
12-15% kcal from protein
o Energy(cal) needs
Determined by age and genetics, higher for active people, vary between
males and females, body size and composition, depends on type of
training and goals of the athlete
Needs can be high (5400kcal/day for a 90kg adult body builder in
the building phase of training)
Low energy intakes = poor sport performance
Loss of muscle mass
Menstrual dysfunction
o Female training triad
o Over training fatigue
o Exercise can increase the loss of nutrients
B vitamins: thiamin, riboflavin, niacin: produce ATP from carbs and fat
B6, folate, B12: needed for synthesis of red blood cells
B6 glycogen breakdown, hemoglobin
CalciumL weight bearing exercise can increase bone density
Female athletic triad can decrease bone density, restrictive eating,
large amounts of exercise, hormonal changes
o Amenaria: dysfunction of menstural for 3 months
o Increased risk of osteoporosis
Iron may be increased: due to increased red blood cell production,
increase of iron loss with training
Iron deficieiny common in female athletes
Impairs exercise, reduces immunity
Should not require supplementation, it should be met with a
healthy diet
o Sports anemia: not true form of anemia
Temporary decrease in hemoglobin concentration that occurs during
traiig, does’t ipair oge deliver to tissues
Poor intake, foot strike hemlysis, increase in loses, blood volume
expans in response to training
Hemoglobin production sometimes lags behind
