Guest lecture by dr. prado on 5th oct 2017 nutr 100. Body mass index takes height and weight into consideration. Bmi: weight in kg: square of the height meter square. A person who has very low muscle mass we think someone is very thin and underweight. Does not tell us the different mass of fat or body composition. At any given bmi, we can have a person with very lean mass, average lean mass or fat mass. Underwater weighing: going inside a pool, measuring weight inside and outside. But it is not convenient because there is participant pressure. Dxa divides the body into three parts: fat, lean and bone. Uses x-ray so risky for teenagers and pregnant women. Skinfold: not the correct method, can be a problem with people obese or old. E. g. abdominal fat is more important than subcutaneous fat. Ethnicity matters when you are measuring body composition. Men have more muscle, women have more fat.
