Extraneous : variables that can affect the measurement of study variables and the relationship between those variables. Exist in all studies even if not speci ed. Control : a variable that is held constant in order to assess or clarify the relationship between two other variables. Independent : variable that is manipulated or varied by the researcher to be related to or cause an effect on the dependent variable. Dependent : the outcome or response that is presumed to be related to or changed by the independent variable. Antecedent : a variable that affects the dependent variable but occurs before the introduction of the independent variable. Mediating : a second variable pathway through which the iv affects the dv. Something that the independent variable goes through to get to the dv.
