Unit 2 : caring for the client/family with degenerative neurological conditions. Medical-surgical nursing : chapter 11 - chronic illness. Chronic conditions : medical or health problems with associated symptoms or disabilities that require long-term maintenance (3 months or longer) Many have pain and fatigue as associated symptoms, require complicated therapeutic regimens to successfully manage. Chronic : prolonged trajectory and conditions are generally incurable. Psychological, emotional and cognitive reactions to chronic conditions are likely to occur at the initial onset, but they may also recur if symptoms worsen or recur after a period of remission. Management of such conditions includes learning to live with symptoms and/or disabilities and coming to terms with life changes brought about by having a chronic condition. Also consists of carrying out the lifestyle alterations and self-care regimens that are designed to keep symptoms under control and prevent complications.
