Document Summary

Allogeneic skin grafts placed heterotopically in the anterior chamber of the eye and into the brains of the rabbits survive for prolonged, sometimes indefinite, periods of time. Some organs are less prone to rejection rxn. Allogeneic graft: graft derived from a different donor of the same species. Syngeneic graft: graft derived from a genetically identical indiv (ie identical twin) Xenogeneic graft: graft derived from a different species. Autologous graft: graft derived from the same indiv. Heterotopic graft: graft placed in a non-physiological site (ie skin transplanted into the brain) Eye: cornea, anterior chamber, vitreous cavity and subretinal space. All have some sort of barrier protecting organ from immediate access from immune cells. Surrounding barrieor of endothelial cell = cells like pericytes (role not fully known) Pseudopodia of astrocytes compact to make barrier tighter. Constituted by a series of receptors; many cells can be part of both adaptive and innate.
