Vakulinchuk is introduced as a potenial protagonist, but he dies soon, so the viewer does not have a character to align with. Vakulinchuk is replaced with a collecive protagonist of sailors and the people of odessa. Most of the actors were played by unprofessionals who were real working people with unglamorous faces. Mostly presented in montage, they remain anonymous and thus the viewer cannot align with them. The lack of a protagonist and individualized characters encourages to idenify with the common cause, and not individual problems. There are 3 shots presening 4 mourning women, 4 mourning men, and the body of dead vakulinchuk. This is a dramaic situaion that could be presented as a coninuous scene using coninuity ediing. However, here, there was no establishing or master shot that would provide. The basic idea was informing his theory and ilmmaking. He wanted to produce an efect of salutary shock to the spectators.
