Surveillance: close observation, regard, or attendance of others. Culture: that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits by man as a member of society (e. b taylor) Surveillance culture: a system of knowledge obtained, circulated, and generated through ideas and technologies of surveillance. Surveillance is a newish term (19th century) that names a much older practice of watching; in the 16th century, queen elizabeth once remarking that there ought to be protection against, In america, this begins post-revolution in part through the practice of physiognomy (face- reading) Surveillance arises as a counter-technology to the anonymity of the urban street. American surveillance moves from post-revolutionary face-reading to other forms of watching.
