Document Summary

Eas 100 - lecture #7 - the earth in space. Gravity pulled a cloud of dust and gas together which became hot and dense. Solid particles and liquid droplets began to condense from the gas. Condensates became the building blocks of the planets, moons, and other objects. Space missions continue to provide evidence indicating that all objects in the solar system formed at the same time from a single solar nebula. Five key factors played determining roles in the subsequent evolution of the terrestrial planets. Rings made of chunks of ice and rock. Geocentric: all objects revolve around the earth. Heliocentric: all objects revolve around the sun. Radius: ~ 700,000 km (109 times earth"s diameter) Distance between sun and earth is 150*10 6 . Distance between earth and moon is 315*10 3 . Reduced elsewhere because energy is spread over larger area. Radiates heat as a result of thermonuclear fusion reactions in its core.
