Document Summary

Chem 261 introductory organic chemistry i (adapted from prof. c. cairo"s notes) As the size of the halogen increases, the c x bond strength decreases and the c x bond length increases. The c x bond is polarized; the carbon attached to the halogen is electropositive and is an electrophilic center. Alkyl halides readily react with nucleophiles to do one of two things: substitute or eliminate. Reaction depends on the concentration of one thing. Reaction depends on the concentration of two things. Reaction depends on the concentration of three things: consider the following reaction, this is a one-step reaction with no intermediate. In the rate-determining step, two things (oh- and ch3br) collide to react. The rate depends on the concentration of two things and this is a second-order reaction: rate equation, reaction rate = rate of disappearance of the starting materials. Rate = k[oh-] [ch3br]. k = rate constant, constant number for a particular reaction.
