Document Summary

Chem 261 introductory organic chemistry i (adapted from prof. c. cairo"s notes) Suggested text problems: all questions in chapter 4, exclude 4. 45, 4-48, 4-49. Classification of alkanes: the three simplest alkanes are, methane (ch4), ethane (ch3ch3), propane (ch3ch2ch3), the only way to link two or three carbons is in a linear fashion. 1: names of straight chain alkanes memorize. Alkyl groups: removal of a hydrogen from an alkane gives an alkyl group, named by taking parent name and replacing -ane ending by -yl, other important groups: Naming of alkanes: the name of an alkane has three parts, nomenclature rules, find the longest chain, the longest chain may not be obvious; look for longest chain of linearly linked carbon atoms regardless of how it"s drawn. 2: number atoms in the main chain, number such that branch points have lowest possible number. If the first branch is equidistant from each end, number such that the second branch has the lowest number.
