Document Summary

The life and times of rosie the riveter. The key issues around wwii was that it was a gendered moment. It was a time of crisis, and gender relations and norms were thrown out the window, when men were sent away and the country had to keep running. Strict obedience to the norms that were formally seen as absolute had to be changed. Men"s conscription mean that male exclusive jobs had to be filled by women. Wartime thus granted women unconventional training such as welding, from which they were formerly excluded. Prior to the war, social spheres were being debated. In an article by medic martin, a member of the quebec legislative council in 1933,, argued that working women were to blame of the depression, and that thus it was their patriotic duty to give up paid employment.
