Ethnography of black men who hung out at jelly"s" bar and liquor store. South side chicago in the early 1970s- book published in 1976. Research problem: to decipher the social order of black men on a gheto street corner. Important for class because it shows: the social organizaions involve categorical disincions- interior categories, how status operates through conformity to norms and associaions, adding more detailed mechanisms. Jelly"s: informal organizaion with boundaries on interacions: for example: conversaions in liquor store stop when stranger enters, strangers at bar pay when served whereas regulars can run a tap, people are more reserved towards strangers. Boundary problems of entry": eli becomes part of the group through hermann, a high status regular". Spends days trying to get in with the group- at irst associates with strangers in the bar half, then one person who hangs out in the liquor store half comes to check him out.
