Combinaion of gender"s persistent presence and unique coniguraion in each plant. Categorical inequality has some very general properies one of those properies is to vary in pracical operaion with the historically accumulated understandings, pracices and social relaions already atached to a given set of disincions. Scripts: models for paricipaion in paricular classes of social relaions; rouines and formulas for doing things socially: mistakes, unanicipated consequences, changing circumstances require improvisaion, efecive improvisaion uses shared local knowledge of the paricipants acquired through interacion. What"s the diference: relaive to organizaion being considered: factory, family, school , speciic (to organizaion) vs. general (in its environment including other organizaions) Interior categories: part of organizaional structure built-in, observable: Bounded and ritualized: social relaions between members of diferent categories limited and highly scripted. Gender, as a category, typically afects family life but in sense shouldn"t afect a factory- but it does: and when it does it has consequences.
