We are no longer a society content with iguring out who we are and what makes us who we are: we want to improve" ourselves, psychologists are trying to solve" this problem. Depends on the idea that the self is very individualisic and is separate from the rest of the world. Self-contained individualism: dominant framework of thinking about the self in western society and in psychological science. They pass the urine test (sense of smell) We see ourselves as a more individualisic being: more personal than social self-descripions on a list of 20 things. Symbolic interacionism: self cannot be understood without considering the impact of others on our idenity, self is enabled and deined by our social roles and relaionships. The looking-glass self: imagine how we seem to appear to others, imagine how that appearance is judged by others, develop our self-image through the judgement of others.
