Health psychology the relationship between psychological variables and health: health psychologists assume that beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours contribute to the prevention, onset, and course of illness. Stress: a nonspecific response of the body to any demand made on it, the arousal to situations or events that we perceive as threatening or challenging. Sources of stress: personality factors, environmental factors, sociocultural factors. Environmental factors: life events and daily hassles, conflict, overload & burnout (chronic stress, work-related stress. Stress responses: general adaptation syndrome, cognitive appraisal. The general adaptation syndrome: selye(cid:495)s three stages, alarm stage, resistance, exhaustion. Alarm stage: first reaction to the stress; temporary shock, body most susceptible to illness, body releases hormones that quickly harm the immune system, the effect of this stage is to generate emergency energy. If we have too many stressors or they last a long time, we stat to use up our resources!
