Reliability: extent to which observations can be replicated, are measures dependable or stable, common factors affecting reliability. Validity: extent to which observations actually reflect the topic of interest in a given study. The definition of behaviours or qualities in terms of how they are to be measured. Consider three possible definitions for measuring romantic love. Occurs when the researcher fails to control important variables that may influence the key variable[s: experimenter bias. When the researcher may act differently towards individuals in a particular group. Just knowing which group a participant is in may change the way a researcher may be- have: participant bias. Participants may act in ways they believe correspond to what the researcher is looking for. This is one of the most common ways of controlling for demand characteristics. The participant is unaware of which group they are in.
