September 20 lecture outline: warfare in renaissance italy. Introducion: charles viii"s invasion of italy (1494: french king who started the war, wars will begin a struggle with the italian, french, and the spanish. Italy known as the school of war: beginning of the hapsburg-valois wars (1494-1559) Spanish against italians, spanish basically win: the army of charles, cavalry, infantry and crossbowmen. City states and foreign foes: warfare between city-states. Town was the poliical centre and the outside of the town was conquered and controlled the country side. The papal states around rome were very poliical places: norman and german invasions, frederick barbarossa. Took over rome and put his own pope up: defeated at the batle of legnano (1176) Italians came together which led to their victory, diicult because the city-states" poliical wants were diferent: 13th century: ghibellines (supported the emperor) and guelfs. The pope has let, leaving the papal states struggling.
